About Us

Right here in the Great Lakes State, the Michigan Coalition for Prosperity is working towards economic empowerment and equal treatment under law for all Michiganders. We recognize that the first step in addressing these issues is starting a dialogue between communities in every corner of Michigan and highlighting the solutions that can make the most impact. Prosperity for Michigan starts right here.

“As Wayne County Commissioner and a longtime Democratic advocate in Detroit, I started the Michigan Coalition for Prosperity because I saw an opportunity to reach folks across Michigan. I have seen firsthand the economic and equal justice struggles our communities are dealing with, and I hope to empower Michiganders to speak up.” – Jonathan C. Kinloch, Wayne County Commissioner

What We’re Focusing On

Economic Prosperity

The coronavirus pandemic has been a hard time for Michigan. In September 2021, U of M’s Ford School of Public Policy found that while economic conditions in our state are improving, the pandemic is still causing economic disruption for local governments. Just a few months ago, 61% of officials from Michigan’s largest jurisdictions still reported significant or crisis-level economic impacts due to the pandemic.

Now more than ever, we need to focus on economic prosperity. The best way to do that is by empowering our financially marginalized communities. We’re thankful to Michigan’s own Senator Gary Peters for introducing the Restoring Communities Left Behind Act, a bill that will establish a grant program for neighborhood revitalization support activities in economically distressed areas. This is exactly the type of leadership both Michigan and the entire country need.

Criminal Justice Reform

When the bipartisan Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration discovered that “Michigan’s jail incarceration rate tripled from 1960 to 2016, even as crime in the state dropped to a 50-year low,” our state sprang into action. On January 4th, 2021, Michigan’s state leaders adopted a groundbreaking criminal justice reform bill package to reduce incarceration and boost public safety. This was an important first step in correcting the injustices that folks in Michigan have faced for so long, especially those in Black and Brown communities.

We need to push for the same reforms at the federal level. Bills like the Counseling Not Criminalization in Schools Act, which awards grants to schools that reform their disciplinary policies away from the criminal justice system, and resolutions like H.Res.226 to recognize the moral obligation of the United States to guarantee justice for all, are fundamental to criminal justice reform. We need federal policies that work to reduce incarceration rates, prioritize equity and dignity in our justice system, and preserve safety.
